Bulk-link Shopify metaobjects to products

A metaobject entry is reusable content (a size chart, ingredients panel, care guide, lookbook). A product metafield stores a link to that entry. Shopify Admin lets you pick that link on a single product. Bulk link applies the same entry across the products you choose—inside Metafield Editor+Data Doctor (Pro).

What Shopify Admin does—and does not—do

Shopify is excellent at the data model: create a metaobject definition, create entries, and attach a metaobject-reference metafield to products. On a product page you pick one entry. On the entry screen you can see which products already reference it. That inbound list is read-only—you cannot assign products from there.

For bulk work, native options are a product CSV (handles or GIDs in metafield columns) or the product bulk editor. Those are spreadsheet tools, not a merchandiser flow. There is no first-class Admin action: “apply Men’s size chart to these products.” That is the gap bulk link fills.

  • Native: one product at a time, or CSV / bulk editor with GIDs or handles
  • Missing: choose entry → choose products → preview → apply
  • Bulk link is that missing step—not a replacement for Shopify’s metaobject schema

What bulk link actually writes

Bulk link does not copy every field from the metaobject onto the product. It sets one product metafield so the product points at the entry you chose. Update the entry later and every linked product stays current.

If that metafield already had a different value, bulk link replaces it. List-type references are replaced as a whole (not appended). Today the tool writes product metafields—not variant or collection metafields.

  • Example: entry “Men’s size chart” + metafield custom.size_chart → every selected product’s custom.size_chart points at that entry
  • Shoppers see nothing until your theme or a theme app block displays that metafield
  • Show on storefront in the app opens the theme editor after a successful run

How to use bulk link in the app

You need Pro or Unlimited, and Metaobject Studio permissions approved if Shopify prompts you.

  • 1. Create the metaobject type and at least one entry (or use ones you already have in Shopify).
  • 2. Enable on products if no product metafield references that type yet—this creates the field bulk link will write.
  • 3. Open Metafields and Metaobjects → Bulk link metaobjects (or Studio → Bulk link).
  • 4. Choose the metaobject type, then the entry, then the product metafield.
  • 5. Browse products (search by title, SKU, tag, vendor) or paste handles / numeric IDs / GIDs under Advanced.
  • 6. Leave Dry run on and run once. Review the product titles that would update.
  • 7. Uncheck Dry run and run again to write. Large lists queue a background job—you can leave the page.
  • 8. Undo restores the previous metafield value on products that still hold what this run wrote.

When to use bulk link vs CSV vs Admin

Use Shopify Admin when you are linking a handful of products by hand. Use CSV (in this app or Shopify’s product import) when each row needs a different metafield value, or you are migrating a full file. Use bulk link when many products should share the same metaobject entry.

  • Bulk link — one shared size chart / ingredients / lookbook across a season or collection
  • CSV — mixed values per SKU, migrations, Health-scan fix files
  • Admin picker — spot fixes on a few products

Typical jobs

Apparel: men’s chart on all men’s styles, women’s chart on all women’s styles. Beauty: the same usage or INCI panel on a product family. Agencies: after a migration or a new metafield definition, attach the correct shared entry without a script.

FAQ: bulk-linking metaobjects

Is this something Shopify already shipped? Shopify shipped the schema and single-product pickers—not a first-class apply-this-entry-to-a-product-set tool. CSV and the bulk editor can write the same metafield type if you supply handles or GIDs.

Does bulk link change my theme? No. It only writes the product metafield reference. Use Show on storefront (or your theme’s dynamic sources) so shoppers can see the content.

Can I undo? Yes, after a successful apply, while products still match the linked value. Products edited since the run are skipped.

What if I need different entries per product? Use CSV import, not bulk link.
