Metaobjects & bulk link for Shopify merchants

Metaobjects hold reusable structured content—size charts, ingredients, lookbooks—that product metafields can reference. Metaobject Studio (Pro / Unlimited) brings definitions, entries, and bulk link into the same app as your metafield workflow.

Metafields vs metaobjects

Use a metafield when the value belongs to one resource (this product’s care guide). Use a metaobject when the same structured record should be reused or referenced by many products.

References keep catalogs DRY: update the metaobject once, and every product that points at it stays current.

What Studio helps you do

Create and edit custom metaobject definitions and entries, review inventory and required fields, bulk-link entries to products, and run reference and coverage scans. Show on storefront opens the theme editor for app blocks—nothing is written to your theme automatically.

  • Definition and entry CRUD for merchant-owned types (Shopify-standard types stay read-only for schema)
  • Inventory hub, entry review grid, and CSV export
  • Bulk link to products with product browser, dry run, and undo
  • Reference health and custom-data coverage scans
  • Theme block deeplinks—not draft-theme injection or JSON-LD writes (those are not shipped yet)

Bulk link: one entry to many products

Bulk link writes a product metafield so each selected product points at the metaobject entry you choose. Products do not copy every field from the entry—they store a reference. Shoppers only see the content after your theme (or an app block) displays that metafield.

This is the high-leverage path when hundreds of SKUs should share the same size chart, ingredients list, or lookbook. Pick the entry once, choose products with Shopify’s product browser (search by title, SKU, tag, vendor) or paste a handle/ID list, preview with dry run, then apply. A successful run can be undone when products still match the linked value.

  • Choose entry → choose product metafield → select products → dry run → apply
  • Browse multi-select for day-to-day sets; Advanced paste for spreadsheet-sized lists
  • Dry run shows product titles before anything is saved
  • Use CSV instead when each product needs a different metafield value

When bulk link shines

Apparel teams attach men’s and women’s size-chart entries across a season. Beauty and supplements brands keep ingredients and usage copy consistent across variants. Agencies attach the right shared entry after a migration or a new metafield definition—without a custom script.

Pair with Product Data Health

Health finds missing references and coverage; Studio is where you create entries and bulk-link them to products. Together they support complete, reusable custom data for themes and channels.

FAQ: Metaobject Studio & bulk link

Does bulk link replace CSV? No. Use bulk link when many products should share one metaobject reference. Use CSV when you are importing many different values or migrating files.

Will shoppers see the entry automatically? Not until your theme or a theme app block displays the product metafield that stores the reference. Studio’s Show on storefront helps you open the theme editor.

Can I undo a bulk link? Yes—after a successful apply, undo restores the previous metafield value on products that still match what was written.
